Case Studies - Bali School Children Holiday Programme (Proposed)

Learning Area : School Education

This programme has been developed subsequent to a request from several parents, living in Bali, who wanted to see a programme developed for their children during the 2006/7 brief summer vacation period.

The programme would enrol up to 60 children from 7/8 years of age to 12/13 years of age.    The children would be placed initially into 4 groups.

For the parents, the programme would focus on the development of English language skills, using ?modern? pedagogy and delivered by well-respected and well-credentialed educators from Australia.

For the students, the programme would be an enjoyable and novel learning experience.

The programme would be based on an inquiry approach to learning and use ?wonderment? as its key.  Children would be asked to investigate what it is they wonder about/question.  Using an inquiry learning model, the children would be taken through the process of discovering their ?answer? to their question.  The resolution would be presented to an audience using a method/media of the child?s choosing ? eg poem, PowerPoint, model, etc.

The first few days may be more structured than the last two.  Initially children would rotate through each teacher and look at their question from the teacher?s specialist area/s.  Later children may choose to work with a particular teacher who can assist them with their presentation.

Children will be encouraged to work in groups but may choose to follow an inquiry individually.

The day would be loosely structured so as to be able to respond to the needs of the children.

Learning Areas covered during the course of the programme would include:

  • Literacy in English

  • English as a Second Language through the Language Arts

  • Thinking skills

  • Arts - Art, Music (including some accoustic work), Drama

  • Mathematics

  • Science

  • Studies of Society & Environment

It would be planned to utilise some Information Communication Technologies strategies and processes throughout the programme.

EDN also has a primary goal to "give back" to the community.

In this instance, it is planned that each of the consultants will organise and present at least one session to a group of nominated Indonesian teachers, who would be selected because they teach English in their school.

The latest thoughts in pedagogy and methodology would be presented to the participants, in some of the following areas:

  • Teaching Reading and Writing

  • Inquiry learning

  • Drama as a process for learning

  • The Story of Writing or Numbers

  • Studies of Society & Environment

  • Facilitating learning in the English language classroom ? some approaches and strategies for ELTs

  • Utilising ICT in the classroom (using available technology)

  • Thinking Skills
